UC San Diego Health is one of five academic medical centers within the 10-campus University of California system. Collectively known as UC Health, these medical centers comprise the fourth largest health care delivery system in California and train nearly 50 percent of the state’s medical students and medical residents.

The only academic medical center in the San Diego region, UC San Diego Health maintains a two-campus strategy, integrating research, teaching and clinical care at locations in Hillcrest and La Jolla. UC San Diego has had a presence in Hillcrest since 1966, when the university assumed operation of the county hospital.

Covering approximately 60 acres, the Hillcrest Campus is located 13 miles south of the UC San Diego La Jolla Campus and is a critical regional resource. The Hillcrest Campus has a Level 1 Trauma Center, Regional Burn Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center as well as provides a significant portion of San Diego County’s uninsured inpatient care.

With the need for all acute care hospitals in California to become compliant with seismic safety provisions of the California Hospital Code by 2030, UC San Diego must plan for these as well as other changes at the Hillcrest Campus. In our planning, we must ensure that we:

  • Create great spaces for people to learn, live and interact.
  • Expand upon and advance our sustainability goals, socially, academically, financially and environmentally.
  • Align with the goals of UC San Diego Health’s 2013 Clinical Strategic Plan.
  • Continue to be inclusive, flexible and receptive to ideas and concerns from our surrounding community.
  • Improve access to campus and enhance connections to the greater San Diego community by embracing regional transportation projects, which have the added benefit of easing traffic and parking demands as well as improving air quality.
  • Preserve the character of the Hillcrest Campus, including those assets that reflect its remarkable physical location, and other elements that make us uniquely UC San Diego.

The Hillcrest LRDP will be the third comprehensive long-range plan for the physical development of the campus. Previous plans were produced in 1978 and 1995. This new plan will guide development through 2035.
